I think that every good vs evil story needs to include a third party faction—the pirate class.

Han Solo and his crew, Gambit from the X-Men, Quark on Deep Space Nine… You need that mercenary character who exists outside of the binary to represent the audience’s ambiguity/ambivalence.

It doesn’t count if these freelancers are the actual protagonists.
