Two essays about sex in comics →
The link is Noah. Below is me.

When I was in high school I found a comic shop that carried Dark Horse Manga (1997, not this newfangled post-tankobon stuff). I picked up Johji Manabe’s Drakuun immediately and became a fan. The thing about Drakuun is that Karula is sexy and even nude (and even HAVING SEX!!!) but at completely different times than when she is killing people...

Week number whatever of building back my glorious comics empire. My website littlegardencomics.com is back online, but in a rudimentary fashion. Still trying to design new comics.
It hurts so bad to start over from the ground. It hurts worse because of how public my thoughts have been.
Everyday, I storyboard comics. The French word for “draw” is “design.” This...

Social activism: true change
Sexist misogynists are motivated by fear—insecurity and sheer terror. Attacking only feeds fears. Instead, use reason to dispel fear.
Album art
I love the art of older jazz and blues recordings. Especially from some of the well-known labels.
So we all agree? Uncanny X-Force is washed up?
We can safely write this one off after the conclusion of the Dark Angel Saga, right?

Obvious joke
When you post something anti-semetic and race-baiting, no, it is NOT an “obvious joke.”
A real joke uses a kind of binary logic that contradicts and collapses itself, creating an understanding of misunderstanding. This wasn’t a joke, it was a vile piece of bigotry.
If the creators did intend to be ironic, here is some advice: YOU HAVE FAILED.

Some good advice from The Awl:
The drama queens are a little more dangerous, because sooner or later you’ll “betray” them and become a character in the stories that they bore someone else with. When they finally snap, go cold. Don’t apologize, engage or grovel. If there’s one thing I wish…

James Stokoe's beautiful blog and impassioned plea... →
Gary Friedrich is in a jam. One man went toe to toe with the largest media conglomeration in the world. Turns out, Walt Disney has more toes.
God help you if you ever have to fight The Mouse.
Mr. Stokoe is donating proceeds from art sales to raise money for Mr. Friedrich.
We're all a little bit poorer, a little bit more... →
I wrote this because the people who make comics, from the corporate suits to the independent zines are corrupt and cynical to the core.
Maybe somebody else will decide to help push back against these immoral ideas about art. I have asthma and high blood pressure. I gave what I had to give.

iPhone or other smartphone question (COMICS)
Do any of you gorgeous ladies and gentlemen read comics on a smartphone?
How much of your normal comics reading takes place on your phone? Do you buy paper comics? Do you prefer phone comics? Why/why-not?
[Note: I’m specifically concerned with smartphones, as opposed to tablets such as the iPad, Nook, Kindle or that weird thing that my cousin had last night]

Sean Witzke, aka SuperVillain makes his return to writing essays about comics. He is sorely missed.
Those of you who know me from Twitter are high sick of me yelling crying about Watchmen Begins…Reborn, whatever they’re calling it. You’re sick of me incessantly talking about this for three days straight and counting. I apologize for my excess.
But if you’ve got a few...

The value of criticism
By Ayo
A lot of you folks say to me that criticism has little or no value. You tell me that you don’t appreciate somebody giving out their opinions.
Well, I don’t give a flying flute.
There are various different intellectual styles and learning styles. For me, much of my ability to learn is a combination of critical analysis of a given subject (comics, for instance) and practice...
I want it all
Reading is magic. I’m reading an article in THE NEW YORKER about a classical musician’s journey to recording a performance. I get it. I for-serious GET classical music. It’s a thing, I didn’t get it, now I do get it.
Reading is magic.
I never even considered “getting” classical music. Now I understand music in general.
Reading is magic.

State of the Humor Address
By Ayo
I’ve been thinking a lot about the North American comic strip as a medium of expression and as a cultural institution. Comic strips are the most widely seen form of the comics medium, but almost the last thing that comes to mind when people hear the term “comics.” Part of this might be that we take our strips for granted, but another part has a lot to do with how the rest...

This is something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately. I’ve run into a lot of situations where openly criticizing/hating something in pop culture or fandom is equated with being mean or rude. I think it’s a really weird and false idea. I wonder if it has something to do with the idea of…

gailsimone:
Been thinking about this a lot lately, pardon me if it’s a bit scattered, I have to jot this down between deadlines and may mess it up a little.
I have seen, a million times, people with complaints about art or comics or film or music, dismissed online with the simple comment, “Make your own,…
Adversity x Adversary
The main problem that I have in general is that no one has ever shouted their problems away. To change the world for the better, one must understand their opponent.
Not just knowing what the enemy says, but knowing why he says it. This is work. Hard work. It requires a curiosity and compassion that most people do not appear to possess naturally. It isn’t fair. Life never is.
Know your...
